In sixth grade, students may qualify for placement in the sixth grade Spanish or Latin class, our world language offering for sixth graders. Sixth graders who have scored at or above the 50th percentile on the fifth grade ITBS test in reading qualify to take a foreign language class in sixth grade.  If they successfully complete the course, they may choose to continue Spanish or Latin in seventh and eighth grades, or they can elect to take French . Completion of the seventh grade and eighth grade course in any of these three languages will award the student one year of high school World Language credit.

Students who score below the 50th percentile on the ITBS take a reading skills course in lieu of a foreign language class. These students may begin a world language in seventh grade if they bring up their reading score to grade level proficiency, or they may continue to work on reading skills throughout middle school and start World Language in ninth grade.
